SHIBAOZHAI TEMPLE. After a night departure from Chongquin aboard the VIKING EMERALD, we arrived arrived at the SHIBAOZHAI TEMPLE (Precious Stone Fortress or Stone Treasure Fortress) the next morning. This Buddist temple was built in 1819; it is 12 stories tall and sits on a rocky plateau. Each of the 12 floors is dedicated to a famous general of the Three Kingdoms period (220-265AD), a local scholar or a renowned Chinese poet. We walked on a sturdy but nonetheless shaky suspension walking bridge to reach the temple. It was uphill all the way from our ship to the temple and the weather was extremely hot and humid, even for those of us who live in Florida. To my surprise, local vendors were selling t-shirts that featured Obama in a Maoist outfit.
