In a rural area near Jingzhou we visited a local elementary school. Although the children were on summer vacation, they and their teachers presented a special program of dance and singing for us, followed by a visit to one of their classrooms. The Viking River Cruises sponsors this school. The students were well-mannered and appeared to be very serious about their education. Learning the English language is a core part of their curriculum. Norma, being the retired math teacher she is, enjoyed talking with their teacher and looking over the math materials they use in class.

Of all the cities we visited, the town of Jingzhou seemed to be the least modern. However, the city has a long history. For 6,000 years, it has been a city of military importance and a transportation hub due to it's location. During the Zhou Dynasty, it served as the seat 20 kings.
