New Fat Albert
2021 saw the official introduction of a new Fat Albert, a C-130J. The J model was purchased from the United Kingdom and converted for exclusive Blue Angels use including a new paint job.
Fat Albert flies with a Blue Angels USMC crew of seven including three officers and five enlisted members. Albert is used to transport luggage, personnel, supplies and equipment to airshows.
Always popular with airshow crowds, the Legacy Fat Albert was a C-130T. Beginning in 1975 at airshows, Albert would perform spectacular take-offs using eight JATO rockets. The practice ended when the supply of Viet Nam-era JATO rockets was exhausted in 2007. The T model was retired in 2020 with over 30,000 flight hours.
