Vesuvius from Island of Capri

Pompeii was a city of 20,000 residents when the volcano that was Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD and completely covered the city in ash. At the time of its destruction, Pompeii was considered to be more cosmopolitian than Rome.

The homes of the wealthiest citizens contained beautiful works of art, particularly frescoes. Pompeii also contained public baths, cobblestone streets, sidewalks and many private shops where its residents could purchase almost anything they wanted.
