On a very hot and intensely smoggy day in Beijing, we visited Tianammen Square and the Forbidden City. At 100 acres in size, Tiananmen Square is the world's largest public square. It was originally considered to be the "front entrance" to the Forbidden City. Today, it includes the tomb of Mao Zedong, who reportedly killed as many as 70 million of his countrymen during his dictatorship. China is a much different and much better country today (IMHO). The square was closed to the public on the day we visited because of a special Army Day event scheduled for later in the day. With 980 buildings and 9,999 rooms, Forbidden City is the world's largest palace complex. It was the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing Dynasties and is protected by a 20 foot moat and a 32 foot wall. Today, it is officially known as the Palace Museum.
