Patmos is a small Greek island located in the Aegean Sea. According to Greek mythology, the original name of the island was Letois, after the goddess Artemis. The island was underwater until Artemis, with her brother Apollo, convinced Zeus to raise the island and give life to it. Patmos is where the disciple John wrote the Book of Revelation in the New Testament of the Bible. For this reason, Patmos today is an important religious pilgrimage destination.

In 1999, Chlora, the island's historic center, the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, and the Cave of the Apolcalypse were declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
