PETRA, PART 1. Petra is thought to have first been settled as early as 9,000 B.C. By the 4th century, B.C., it had likely been established as the capital city of the Nabataean Kingdom. The Nabataeans were a nomadic people who invested in Petra's proximity to the important trade routes by establishing it as a major regional trading hub. The city is accessed through a 3/4 mile long gorge called the Siq, which leads directly to the Khazneh (Treasury). Petra is famous for its architecture cut directly out of rock, and its water conduit system. Petra is sometimes called the Rose City due to the color of the stone out of which it is carved.
