The Second line is a traditional parade, most often held during Mardi Gras season as part of a krewe function, a parade, a Mardi Gras Ball parade, or related celebrations. The “main line” always includes a band. Those who parade about as the band plays festive music are called the “second line.” The “second line” participants walk in a progression, often twirling a parasol or waving a handkerchief in the air. Second Lines originated in New Orleans but have spread throughout the nation and especially the deep south.
