We began our day's adventure with a visit to an unfinished 3,500 year old obelisk in Aswan. It is the largest known ancient obelisk. It lies exactly as it was found in the quarry and was originally intended to be 120 ft. tall when completed.
We then traveled to Philae Temple, which we reached by powered boat as the temple is located on an island in the reservoir of the Aswan Low Dam. The original temple was begun by Ptolemy II and completed by the Roman Emperors. The temple complex was dismantled and moved to its present site on Agilkia Island beore the completion of the Aswan High Dam in 1970.
From Philae, we traveled to the Aswan Dam for a short view. As probably it should be, the dam was closely watched by an assortment of serious looking guards and vehicles. I worked in the electric power industry for many years and I don't think I have ever seen so many high voltage power lines radiating across the land (mostly desert) to distant locations.
