MEMPHIS: Our Friday touring included a visit to the ancient city of Memphis, which is the home of the Step Pyramid. It was the first known monumental structure made of stone anywhere in the world and is about 200 ft. tall. It was built for King Djoser of the third dynasty. Nearby structures were built to serve the spirit of the king.

An open air museum located nearby holds the remains of a 36 ft. limestone statue of Pharaoh Rameses II, which was discovered in 1820. The colossus is displayed lying down due to its missing feet and base. The remaining features provide a flawless detail of the body and some of the original colors can still be seen.
