This well preserved temple was constructed in the ancient city of Thebes, now known as Luxor on the East Bank of the Nile River. Amenhotep, known as one of the best builders of his time, built the temple between 1390 and 1352 BC. It was commissioned by Ramesses II. In ancient times, an avenue of Spinxes ran between it and the Temple complex of Karnak, three kilometers away. That avenue is being excavated now.
